Quotes from Ulyana about the BP Travel Award

On the Award

"The Travel Award provides an opportunity to reflect on our evolving world. In an era where globalisation is part of our daily life ... it's easy to miss how individual's lives are changing." [link]

On the people she met
"We captured the real-life stories of individuals. Some of these were incredibly inspiring and harrowing. For example, Ruslan was tortured in the army, 'Imagine 300 men all with rotting flesh - the smell in the barracks was unbearable. It was only my art that saved me'" [link]

Sitter 'Oleg' comments, "...there was Tony Blair sitting there, drinking his tea. When I told him that I bring British DJs over to Russia he said he also DJs. " [link]

On the method
"I chose to follow the traditions of the famous historical icon painters: to fast for 3 days, then go to confession, stand for hours praying, carry out sacred rights, and then fast for the entire period of painting (1 month)." [link]

On 'Russia'
"I wanted to paint a woman that represented what Russia means to me now: a country that is quite young in terms of the current world political stage, but she is strong, with an aura of experience and solidity that comes from being grounded in real-life hardships. She is the typical woman." [link]
